The Petrol Station has some friends visiting from the Big “D” and is celebrating by tapping a keg of IPA from one of the newest craft breweries in Texas. We promise this won’t be one of those “oh, I want my two friends who don’t have anything in common except me to meet and be friends” kind of awkward platonic set ups where everybody is uncomfortable and just wants to leave. Come out to sample the new beer, or to take advantage of their ‘pint and a burger‘ Monday night special, or maybe some rosemary feta french fries and a pint. Or just a pint. Just how bitter are you? Not bitter, you say, just consumed by a gnawing hate that’s eating away at your gut until you can taste the bile in your mouth? Either way, come out tonight to the Petrol Station, at 985 Wakefield in war-ravaged Garden Oaks. As the only non-Saucer establishment in Texas that’s competing in Stone Brewing’s Most Bitter Bar Challenge 2011, they have one week to serve up as many pints of Stone’s ‘hop-forward’ styles as possible. Somehow the various Bastards don’t make the list. Whatever. I’m not going to be bitter about—wait, I think I will be. That’s the whole point.

Anyway, come on out tonight at 8 PM and show just how bitter you can be in the area-that-isn’t-quite-the-heights. Check out the recently-leased parking lot across the street. And if you’re feelin’ all Polyanna/Pangloss, there are lots of other beers you can drink. Just be ready for us to sneer across the picnic table at you. Jeesh.

There’s not much chance of rain this week here in Texas, and we sure could use some. And while The Petrol Station, at 985 Wakefield in scrappy, ready-to-rumble Garden Oaks, doesn’t have some great rain-making apparatus, their tap selection rotates regularly, so at least there should be a breeze at the bar. So come by at 8 PM to whet your whistle and enjoy the patio in one of the few upsides to our dry spell.

Monday, 21 February 2011: Guitar Man cupcakes at the Petrol Station

On this day in 1967, Elvis Presley began recording the soundtrack to the movie Clambake. The first track on that album was a cover of Jerry Reed‘s “Guitar Man.” On this date in 1981, a remix of The King’s version of the song hit #43 on the UK charts; Jerry Reed was 43 at the time. Coincidence? I think not. It just gives you goosebumps, doesn’t it?

Tonight, we’ll be at The Petrol Station, at 985 Wakefield in pastoral Garden Oaks, at 8 PM. With 35 craft beers on tap, there’s bound to be something to pair quite well to banana cupcakes with peanut butter cream cheese frosting. The cupcakes are not really in honor of The King or the Snowman; they’re actually in honor of Sam McJunkin’s birthday last week. He’s a good bit younger than Jerry Reed was in 1981, by the way!

That means with 35 craft beers on tap, there’s a better chance that they won’t have floated the keg on the variety you had your heart set on when you get there. It also means a trip is in order!
