On this day in 1774, John Chapman, AKA Johnny Appleseed, was born. On this same day in 1820, Daniel Boone died. Today, then, would be a perfect day for a hard cider or a bourbon cocktail, wouldn’t it? Anvil Bar and Refuge, at 1424 Westheimer, is the best bet on lower Westheimer for a good beer (and, very rarely, cider) with one of the finest tap systems in the city (at least until sibling Hay Merchant arrives). They also make mixed drinks with bourbon, rye, gin, and a host of spirits you probably have never heard of (but not vodka: hipsters hate vodka). See you there at 8 PM. Rudyard’s British Pub, in the heart of Hyde Park at 2010 Waugh, has a nice list of rotating taps that usually has something for everyone (and often some real rarities). An IPA would be particularly appropriate. See you there at 8 PM. Parking is available in two lots nearby.

Anvil (1424 Westheimer Rd.) gets lots of press for its cocktails, but its small-but-scrappy beer wall is impeccably well-maintained. Until its younger brother Hay Merchant opens, it’s the best set of taps on Lower Westheimer. Plus, if you don’t want a beer (gasp) there is the chance that Anvil will serve you the cocktail you want (unless you want a martini or anything with amaretto or anything else they don’t approve of). See you there at 8 PM and watch out for the parking situation.

Coming Soon: Texas Beer Festival

The Texas Beer Festival is happening in Humble, TX on May 7th. There are a number of related events (a pub crawl and a number of beer dinners) happening during the week before and the week after the fest itself. Looks like it will be an interesting time to be in Humble and and the greater Houston-Humble-Tomball-Cut-n-Shoot-Clute Metroplex.

Rudyard’s British Pub, in the heart of Hyde Park, at 2010 Waugh, has a nice list of rotating taps that usually has something for everyone (and often some real rarities). It should be down right chilly tonight (for Houston), so come warm up with great company and great beers.

There are a couple of bands playing upstairs, but we’ll be at ground level. Parking is available in two lots nearby.
