On this day in 1774, John Chapman, AKA Johnny Appleseed, was born. On this same day in 1820, Daniel Boone died. Today, then, would be a perfect day for a hard cider or a bourbon cocktail, wouldn’t it? Anvil Bar and Refuge, at 1424 Westheimer, is the best bet on lower Westheimer for a good beer (and, very rarely, cider) with one of the finest tap systems in the city (at least until sibling Hay Merchant arrives). They also make mixed drinks with bourbon, rye, gin, and a host of spirits you probably have never heard of (but not vodka: hipsters hate vodka). See you there at 8 PM.
