Monday, 30 August 2010: An August Gathering at Anvil

The last Monday in August isn’t the official end of summer, or even the end of summer swelter here in Houston.  It is the last Monday for wearing white shoes, if you’re into that sort of thing.  Celebrate the beginning of the end of summer with a refreshing cocktail or a beer from the finest tap system in Houston. The Anvil also features very tasty pretzels from Slow Dough, and they’ve recently expanded their menu to include some other food items, if you get peckish.  See you at Anvil Bar & Refuge 1424 Westheimer Rd. Ste. B, 8PM.  Park in one of their lots or watch out for No Parking zones.

We’ll be at Under the Volcano (aka “The Volcano” not “Eyjafjallajokul“, pictured to the right) tonight.   2349 Bissonnet St @ Morningside, 8 PM

Hopefully, we’ll get to sample some of Saint Arnold’s Weedwacker Moveable Yeast Hefeweizen.  Otherwise, there will undoubtedly be some other SA beers, some European favorites, and the standard tiki drinks on hand.

The folks at the Houston Press give a thumbs’ up to one of our favorite hang-outs:

The bar’s location, not far from Ella and 34th Street, is probably out of the way for anyone who doesn’t live in the neighborhood, which is a shame, because while we were drinking our beer, we were thinking that every neighborhood should have a Petrol Station.

Of course, if this place opened in Midtown, Montrose or Rice, it would probably be ruined, not a quiet seat in the bar.
